Another sign we've come a long way...

I recently saw the original The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), and was laughing/shocked by this scene:

It reminds me of seeing Mel Brooks Silent Movie (1974) recently for the first time in ten years. In the scene when Marty Feldman is running from elevator to elevator in the hospital, there are ash trays on the wall by the elevator buttons. I thought it was a joke until I remembered in the 1970's that this was simply realistic set dressing.
